A scavenger hunt

  1. The Forced Entrance

Welcome to the north face of the Great Pyramid of Giza, where massive tiers of weathered limestone rise above the desert plateau. Look toward the dark, jagged opening carved into the stone blocks just ahead of the steps. Near the threshold of this ancient breach, a symbol of the rising sun waits in plain sight near the edge of your view.

  2. The Chiseled Detour

Inside the rough-hewn corridor, daylight filters through openings in the irregular limestone walls where tunnelers once forced their way through solid masonry. Follow the worn stone path ahead, then search the shadowy rock ledges nearby for a protective amulet watching over the passage.

  3. The Straight Descent

You now stand at the top of the Descending Passage, a remarkably straight shaft plunging deep into the pyramid at a twenty-six-degree angle. Gaze down the long wooden ramp lined with low stone walls, then search the area behind you for a vessel of offerings left at the junction.

  4. The Unfinished Depths

Thirty meters beneath the desert surface, the passage opens into the Subterranean Chamber, a cavernous room hollowed directly out of the living bedrock. Look up toward the iron railing perched atop the jagged rock cliff, then sweep your beam across the uneven pit floor to uncover the symbol of eternal life.

  5. Threshold of the Gallery

After climbing the cramped Ascending Passage, the ceiling suddenly vaults overhead where the corridor meets the base of the Grand Gallery. Look back down the steep wooden ramp flanked by smooth handrails, then search the landing beside you for a clay storage jar hidden at the crossroads.

  6. Beneath the Gabled Roof

A horizontal passage brings you into the Queen's Chamber, sitting exactly halfway between the north and south faces of the pyramid. Admire the pointed gable ceiling formed by giant angled limestone slabs, then look around the perimeter of the rough stone floor for a quiet feline guardian.

  7. The Granite Sanctuary

At the climax of your climb lies the King's Chamber, constructed entirely of massive red granite blocks barged down the Nile from quarries in Aswan over eight hundred kilometers away. Face the towering granite walls and the low entrance opening across the room, then search behind you for the final royal treasure.

Congratulations, master builders and explorers of Giza. You have journeyed from the desert bedrock beneath the pyramid to the red granite heart of Khufu's monument and uncovered the engineering secrets of the ancient world.
