Queen Nefertari dares you to a game of senet

A scavenger hunt in the Tomb of Nefertari, Valley of the Queens

Made by Mused

  1. The queen dares you to a game.

A painted queen at the bottom of these stairs has waited a very long time for someone to play with. Your first game piece rolled away down the steps when you came in.

  2. Nefertari moves her piece.

The queen in her golden vulture crown looks up from her senet board, and the air turns soft and strange. She whispers that your next piece is resting up high in this first room, on the long stone ledge by the painted wall.

  3. The cows of heaven are watching.

In this little side room seven painted cows and a bull march across the wall. Your next amulet slipped out through the doorway and is hiding in a sandy corner just outside.

  4. The stairway turns into a drawing.

Down the long stairway the walls turn to ink, as if the tomb were sketching itself for you. Anubis lies on his shrine like a watchful black dog near the bottom, and someone left a little light on the steps near him.

  5. Something purrs in the dark.

This back room is so dark that you will need your torch. Something small and furry has curled up in one of the little side rooms off this chamber.

  6. The last square is yours.

Back in the great burial chamber, four painted pillars stand guard around the sunken middle of the room. One last friend is waiting down there to hand you the winning move.

You won the game, and the queen bows to you with a kind smile. Egyptian and Getty conservators spent years cleaning and securing these paintings until their work ended in 1992, so her colors will keep glowing for the brave players who come after you.
