The champions of Olympia have lost their prizes

A scavenger hunt in the Temple of Zeus, Olympia, Greece

Made by Mused

  1. First you need the oil.

No athlete stepped out without a good rub of shiny oil, and the judges have lost the whole jar! It was set down on the grass somewhere near this field of fallen stones.

  2. Grab the javelin.

The pentathletes are warming up under the olive trees and someone has run off with their throwing spear. Whoever took it propped it against a tree trunk on the path you just walked.

  3. Hold your horses.

The chariot race is about to start and one of the horses has wandered off to graze. It slipped away toward the shade of the trees along the path behind the starting field.

  4. Where did the discus land?

A thrower let go a little too hard and the bronze disc sailed off the course. The replay is rolling, so watch the line of old stones along the temple platform behind you.

  5. Find the runner's helmet.

The race in armor is next and the runner has lost his helmet among the fallen blocks of the temple. A narrow path runs between the blocks over to your left.

  6. Now for the big prize.

The victor is waiting and the most precious prize of all is still missing. It fell among the huge column drums that the earthquakes threw down beside the temple platform, right next to where you stand.

Every prize is back and the games can open! Since 776 BC Olympia has crowned its winners with nothing but wild olive, and today the flame for the modern Olympics is still lit here from the sun before it travels the world. Take a bow, champion.
